After renting a car from AMEX Dubai and while driving the car on the road, the first thing we will talk about is why it is so good. The reason is because it was built by a man named Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. He was the founder of the United Arab Emirates, and he was also the ruler of Abu Dhabi until his death in 2004. He was a very smart man who knew what he wanted to do with his life.

HISTORY OF ABU DHABI ROADS

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan started building this network back in 1979 when he became ruler of Abu Dhabi but it took him until 1999 before all of the roads were finished! It took him this long because there were many different types of terrain that needed special attention during construction such as mountains, deserts, etc.

THE FIRST HIGHWAY

The first highway was built in 1963 and it was a 1.5-kilometre stretch that connected Al Bateen Street with Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street in Ruwais. This was followed by a second highway linking Abu Dhabi city centre to Dubai and Bahrain. The first four-lane highway was completed in 1979 and it linked the airport to Jebel Hafeet (Mount Hafeet).

THE TOTAL LENGTH OF HIGHWAYS

The total length of highways in the UAE increased from 860 kilometres in 1994 to 1,300 kilometres in 2004 due to an increase in building private residential compounds by developers such as Emaar Properties and Aldar Properties. This led to an increase in demand for more highways within each emirate as well as between them.

THE ABU DHABI URBAN PLANNING COUNCIL (UPC)

The Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC) is responsible for managing all roads in the city. The UPC was formed in 1976 by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and its main aim is to provide good infrastructure to residents of Abu Dhabi so that they can live comfortably.

THE THIRD HIGHWAY WAS COMPLETED

The third highway was completed in 2002, which was an extension from Al Ain to Ras Al Khaimah. In 2003, the fourth highway was opened between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah. In 2008, the fifth highway was opened between Abu Dhabi and Al Dhafra Region (Musaffah). The sixth one was opened in 2009 between Abu Dhabi and Umm Al Quwain.

In 2010, the seventh one was opened between Abu Dhabi and Kalba region (Khor Fakkan). In 2011, the eighth road was opened between Jumeirah - Nakhal Village area which is an extension of Emirates Road (E17) from Sheikh Zayed Bridge up to DAFZA area where it joins E68 at Airport Interchange."

HERE ARE SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ABU DHABI ROAD NETWORK:

1. There are approximately 20,000 kilometres of roads in Abu Dhabi.

2. The roads in Abu Dhabi vary from highways to small streets and alleys.

3. Most of the roads are paved with asphalt or concrete, but some are paved with sand or gravel as well.

4. There are many different types of roads such as motorways, highways, main streets and more!

CONCLUSION

The road network in Abu Dhabi is a well-developed network that connects the different areas of the city. The road network in Abu Dhabi is the backbone of the city and it is one of its most important features.
